Liposuction for lipedema is not cosmetic. It's medical
Studies have found that liposuction is the only treatment that reduces lipedema fat.
Liposuction for lipedema is not cosmetic. It is functional. The goal is pain reduction and mobility — not appearance. Not every surgeon who does cosmetic liposuction is qualified to treat lipedema, so who you see matters.
What does the research say about liposuction?
A 2024 meta-analysis found meaningful improvements in quality of life after surgery — including a shift from moderate to severe depression down to mild. A scoping review of 13 studies found that nine reported reduced compression therapy use after liposuction. None reported an increase.
What kind of liposuction?
Tumescent liposuction tends to show the best outcomes with the fewest complications. For advanced cases with dense fibrotic tissue, a 2025 study found promising results combining power-assisted liposuction with manual extraction.
Some surgeons perform the procedure while you are awake under local anesthesia, others while you are asleep under general. I have had it done awake and it honestly was not nearly as bad as I expected. Let me know in the comments if you want me to share more about that experience.
What about insurance coverage?
Getting insurance to cover liposuction for lipedema is a long process. You need to find a surgeon who both performs the procedure and is willing to work with your insurance, and that combination is not always easy to find. Which is so unfortunate because liposuction is the only treatment that actually helps lipedema.
The Lipedema Foundation has a directory of medical providers who know lipedema. If you do not find one in your area, try googling “lipedema” and your state. I travel out of state to see my care team because the surgeon in my state told me I needed to lose as much non-lipedema fat as possible before he would operate, which was fatphobic nonsense. I cried after that appointment feeling defeated but I told myself to keep looking. And now I have a care team that I am really proud of. We deserve doctors who actually understand this condition and treat us with respect.
It is possible to get coverage. I got my liposuction procedures covered. It takes patience and the right team — and they are out there.
Does it cure lipedema?
No, unfortunately it does not. But it can bring back mobility, decrease pain and genuinely improve your quality of life — and for a lot of us, that is everything.
